Eni Launches Home Efficiency Campaign, Saves Up To 30%

Rome, 15 May 2007 - Eni presented today its national Energy Efficiency Campaign featuring 24 simple suggestions to enable families to reduce their energy costs by up to 30% and save up to 1,600 euros per year. This is in line with Eni’s commitment to a more rational use of resources.

Through this important programme of education and information, Eni aims to raise citizens’ awareness of energy saving and environmental sustainability. This campaign is intended to act as a catalyst to involve also other players in the economic, industrial and social world in a debate on energy efficiency.

Eni’s Energy Efficiency Campaign is based on a unique study which enables people to calculate the actual value of every single action and quantify the related saving. The overall saving can reach 1,600 euros a year, equivalent to an extra month’s salary. The 24, simple suggestions can be easily adopted without significant lifestyle changes. The programme involves making small adjustments to daily activities such as transport, heating, home lighting and use of household appliances. The savings are calculated for an average, 4-person family.

14 of the 24 suggested behaviours are zero-cost – this means they don’t imply any expense for families. The rest are at a sustainable cost and imply an investment which can rapidly be refunded and in many cases can exploit benefits and incentives. The overall effect of these behaviours enables a saving of up to 30% of a family’s average energy consumption. The 24 suggestions are listed and explained at www.eni.it/efficienza-energetica.

An efficient use of energy by families can have a great effect for the whole of Italy both in terms of the Country’s energy bill and reduction of carbon dioxide. A 30%-reduction in the families’ energy consumption can cut Italian yearly emissions by more than 50 million tons of carbon dioxide, reducing Italy’s deficit compared to the Kyoto protocol targets by more than a half.

Eni also has a long established commitment to research in the field of renewable energies, where it is going to invest 350 million euros in the next 4 years, concentrating in two promising areas: bio-fuels and solar energy.

In bio-fuels, Eni is going to focus on geographical areas where it already has a strong presence – like Africa – in order to produce high-yield, environmentally friendly bio-fuels from traditional crops. This also aims to meet the needs of such Countries in developing industries other than oil and offer a cheaper source of energy to the local population. Eni also focuses on selecting fast-growing plants for energy use and on developing technologies based on micro-organisms such as phytoplancton, micro-seaweed and bacteria producing a new generation of high-yield, environmentally friendly bio-fuels.

In solar energy, the most generous renewable source on our planet, Eni focuses on the development of organic materials and nanotechnologies able to outpace today’s photovoltaic technologies, such as those based on silicon, which are costly and relatively inefficient. A particular focus is dedicated to realizing low-cost solar nanostructure cells using plastic films made by conductive polymers. This would enable the construction of solar cells at a tenth of the cost of the ones produced using traditional technologies. The goal is to convert even a low percentage of the huge amount of the sun-generated energy into electricity at a very affordable cost to help meet the world’s growing energy demand.
