Canadian Solar Opposes Protectionist Tariff, ITC Final Trade Ruling

ONTARIO, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company" or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), one of the world's largest solar companies with a global supply-chain and manufacturing facilities in Canada and China, today announced that while it is relieved an end has come to a lengthy and costly legal suit, they oppose the final ruling of the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) upholding the Department of Commerce's (DOC) earlier findings that Chinese pricing practices have harmed the American Industry. The ITC ruling will implement the DOC's antidumping duties (AD) ranging from 18.32% to 249.96% and countervailing duties (CVD) of 15.24% to 15.97% (depending on the importer of record) on crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells made in China, whether or not assembled into modules.

The ITC also had to determine whether imports covered by the previous DOC critical circumstances determinations are likely to undermine seriously the remedial effect of the AD and CVD orders the DOC will issue.  By a vote of 4 to 2, a majority of the ITC found that critical circumstances do not exist.  As a result of the ITC's negative determinations regarding critical circumstances, the AD and CVD orders concerning these imports will not apply retroactively to goods that entered the United States prior to the date of publication in the Federal Register of the DOC's affirmative preliminary determinations.

"As a global company serving customers in 50 countries, Canadian Solar has consistently adhered to fair trading practices around the world," said Dr. Shawn Qu, chairman and chief executive officer of Canadian Solar. "U.S. exports to China have increased almost 400 percent in the last eight years, and according to the National Solar Jobs Census 2012, the solar industry employs nearly 120,000 Americans across 50 states, reflecting a 13.2 percent increase from 2011. China and the United States are major trade partners and our interests are interwoven. Earlier protectionist tariffs indicate this action simply displaces sales to alternate foreign exporters and is expected to cost U.S. jobs. The tariff is counterproductive to resolving issues on both sides, and we'd like to see both governments engage in discussions to find workable solutions."

Canadian Solar disagrees with the ITC final determination and maintains its position that the Company practices fair trade according to the Trade Act. As a result of this ruling, the Company will leverage its long-term cell supply partners located outside of China to continue to serve the growing demands from its U.S. customers. Canadian Solar is a fiscally strong company dedicated to delivering high quality solar solutions to its customers around the world and will remain actively engaged in the pursuit to reduce the price of solar modules to enable more families and businesses access to affordable solar energy reducing our consumption of fossil fuels and increasing our energy independence."

Canadian Solar Modules Installed in Pennsylvania's Largest Solar Energy Installation

SAN RAMON, Calif., Oct. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company", "we" or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), one of the world's largest solar companies, today announced its modules have been installed in a 5MW (AC) solar plant located in a dense agricultural area of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The environment-friendly solar project, dubbed Keystone, was developed by Community Energy Solar and constructed by groSolar.
Canadian Solar utility-scale MaxPower modules are part of the unique installation by Community Energy, which was adapted with an organic perspective to preserve and improve the farmland the installation resides on. The solar panels are installed on driven posts without concrete to avoid soil disturbance and specific ground cover was selected to maintain and improve the organic soil content.

Exelon Generation and Community Energy's retail marketing division committed to buy the output and backed the financing for the project, which will supply green electricity to customers who sign up for a share of the generation. Several high-profile customers have already endorsed the program including the Philadelphia Phillies, the Clean Air Council, Franklin & Marshal College , Drexel University, Eastern University, Marywood University, Millersville University, and Juniata College .

"The Keystone solar energy project is another example of a long list of utility-scale solar projects that continue to drive job employment across the United States," said Alan King , general manager of Canadian Solar USA. "This project sets an example of how a solar installation can support a community by providing benefits on multiple levels, in addition to generating long-term clean energy."

The 20,000 Canadian Solar 290 watt modules are installed on fixed tilt, ground-mounted aluminum racking and are interconnected to the PPL Electric grid. The solar energy system will supply approximately 7.5 million kilowatt hours per year of electricity, or enough energy to power 653 homes. The installation offsets 5,625 tons of emissions annually, the equivalent sequestration of 28,125 trees per year.

"This is the greenest of the green—local jobs building fuel-free power that will last for decades," said Brent Beerley , Executive Vice President of Community Energy. "Forward-thinking retail electric customers, backed by Exelon Generation on wholesale, and leadership from East Drumore township, the State of Pennsylvania, and the PA Sustainable Energy Fund were all part of making this happen, and we're under construction with an experienced team led by contractor groSolar using Canadian Solar modules. We couldn't be happier with the team," he said.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Keystone project will be held today at 10 a.m. EST, dedicating the new installation and providing an educational session on how solar is the future of new energy.

Canadian Solar Comments on the U.S. Department of Commerce Trade Investigation's Final Determination

ONTARIO, Canada, Oct. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company" or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), one of the world's largest solar companies with a global supply-chain and manufacturing facilities in Canada and China, today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce ("DOC") issued a final determination to impose antidumping duties (AD) of 15.42% and countervailing duties (CVD) of 15.24% on crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells made by Canadian Solar in China, whether or not assembled into modules.

The DOC also confirmed the scope of the trade investigation was limited to silicon photovoltaic cells made in China whether or not assembled into modules, and upheld its opinion on critical circumstances which imposes retroactive CVD/AD up to 90 days from the date of the preliminary determinations issued on March 20, 2012 and May 17, 2012, respectively.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) is currently conducting a separate investigation to determine the extent of economic injury and critical circumstances, before the above described duties can be implemented. A final decision by the ITC is expected on November 7, 2012.

"As one of the largest solar companies in the world, with a global supply-chain and manufacturing facilities in two continents, Canadian Solar has consistently adhered to fair trading practices," said Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Solar. "Over the past several quarters we have maintained a laser focus on initiatives to reduce our manufacturing cost to meet the competition in the global solar energy market place. We have benefited from the decline in our raw material costs, especially silicon, and also from improvements in our cell conversion efficiencies, and from economies of scale, which combined have contributed to Canadian Solar securing its position as one of the world's lowest cost manufacturers of solar photovoltaic modules."

"Our efforts have contributed to making electricity generated by solar photovoltaic modules more competitive with fossil-fuel alternatives worldwide. Bringing down the price of solar modules has been critical to expanding solar installations in the U.S. so we can reduce the use of fossil fuels, and reduce reliance on imported oil.  Lower solar module prices in the U.S. have also contributed to employment growth; the U.S. solar industry now employs more than 100,000 workers, with the vast majority employed in downstream positions in project development, logistics, construction and installation, which directly benefit from lower solar panel prices," continued Dr. Qu.

"While we are disappointed with the DOC final determination, we will continue to defend our position with the ITC ahead of its final determination in November. We will also remain committed to the U.S. solar energy market, leveraging our global supply-chain to provide fairly priced solar energy solutions, to support our employees, partners and customer base," concluded Dr. Qu.

Canadian Solar Expands into Puerto Rico with Planned 26 MW Solar Power Plant Installation

ONTARIO, Canada, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company" or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), one of the world's largest solar companies, today announced the delivery 26 MW of its high quality and high-performing CS6P-P solar power modules to EPC Contractor TSK Solar for the "San Fermin" solar power plant installation in Puerto Rico, co-developed by firms Uriel Renewables inc. and Coqui Power LLC. The solar power plant is located in the North Eastern town of Loiza, a region that regularly faces adverse weather conditions such as hurricanes, tropical storms and flooding. Due to the specific nature of the project and its location, the project's electrical equipment were installed on structures that elevated them two to four meters above ground, and have also been designed to withstand winds of up to 260 kilometers per hour.

The solar power system is expected to be completed and connected to the national grid in December 2012, making it the first photovoltaic project in Puerto Rico to meet the technical requirements of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) by enabling both active and reactive power regulation. Moreover, the electrical frequency will be adjustable and the voltage can be modulated at the grid connection point to accommodate any sudden fluctuations in solar intensity. The PV installation also has a very unique feature with its own predictive weather station to prepare the solar power plant for sudden increases or reductions of sunlight.

"This PV project has proven to have an extra degree of complexity, as we needed to plan, design and engineer for weather conditions particular to the Caribbean region ranging from hurricanes and flooding to a variety of soil types.  The solar plant was also designed to operate in a challenging electrical environment, with 40% overcurrent, voltage control issues and the need for a back-up energy storage system. Given this highly demanding environment, the high-quality and durability of Canadian Solar's modules was essential in meeting the strict requirements for us and our development partner, Uriel," stated Roberto Montes, General Manager of TSK Solar. "Thanks to the robustness of our PV components, the new installation will help further stabilize Puerto Rico's electrical grid."

"The joint efforts, focus and cooperation of all stakeholders involved in this project have helped keep the installation on its planned schedule," said Fernando Metcalf, President of Uriel Renewables. "Canadian Solar's experience, module reliability and high quality has proven to be the right choice for the San Fermin project. We look forward to continue developing the relationship as we deploy our solar PV pipeline in the region".

Canadian Solar's CS6P-P solar modules, which were selected for the Loiza project, recently received the highest PV USA (PTC) ratings – a universally recognized indicator of a solar system's real performance and power output.

"We continue to expand our global presence in markets that are attractive from a financial perspective and where we can work with strong local partners to ensure success," said Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and CEO of Canadian Solar. "We are excited to be involved with innovative solar power plants, like the one in Loiza, as they showcase solar an option for a much wider range of markets with challenging energy needs."

Canadian Solar Provides Solar Modules for alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg

ONTARIO, Canada, Sept. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Canadian Solar Inc. (the "Company" or "Canadian Solar") (NASDAQ: CSIQ), one of the world's largest solar companies, provided the solar modules for one of Europe's largest skiing halls. The PV rooftop installation on the alpincenter in Hamburg-Wittenburg, Germany, uses Canadian Solar modules with a total output of 3.6 MW. The winter sports center's operator reaps a double benefit: using the self-produced solar power significantly offsets energy costs while at the same time reducing the power needed to run the cooling system thank to the shadowing effect underneath the solar system.

The owner, the Dutch Van der Valk Group, was facing the challenge of significantly reducing the energy costs for operating the building, which features 30,000 m² of ski slopes. Installing the structure-mounted rooftop system allows to operate the facility during 365 days a year, using only the self-generated power. This makes the operators independent from the public grid and EEG subsidies. A side benefit of the PV system: the shadow it produces on the roof results in a 50 percent lower surface temperature. This drastically reduces the load on the cooling technology which keeps the indoor temperature at -1 degree Celsius throughout the year, translating into lower energy consumption. The project was planned and implemented by Hamburg-based project company Dr. Metje Consulting.

"For a rooftop system of this scale, efficiency and quality of the modules are paramount. Particularly for the alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg, which wanted to completely cover their energy demand by the self-produced power, performance losses are not tolerable," said Dr. Christian Metje of Dr. Metje Consulting.

"Projects like the alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg are the future of solar energy: PV systems that cover the facility's complete energy demand and that do not depend on public subsidies. It is a particular proof of photovoltaic efficiency that a winter sports center – which needs great amounts of energy - uses solar power. We are therefore extremely proud our modules are now deployed in Wittenburg," said Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and CEO of Canadian Solar.
